We have a 12 Rail road cross tie nail from 1912 of the 20th Century. This may or may not be the exact nail pictured that you receive. It will be a nail of the same casting. Identical other than the normal minor corrosion.
These were used to note the date the ties were laid.I have left them as they came to me, most right out of the ties. An E Bay member has told me that white vinegar can make them look new. I don't know what it would do to the value for a collector so I am leaving any cleaning to you.
You will be bidding on one nail similar to the one in the picture. All have square heads and shafts. This has indented numbers .
This is a great opportunity to purchase a date nail, a dated steel product produced In the USA.
Railroad date code nails were first used in the US in 1899. Earlier nails are hard to find because of the hobby interest are growing and mainly because few things are made in the US and fewer were ever permanently dated. There are well over 3500 different nails used in over 10,000 locations. Later nails are harder to locate because most are still in use. Most companies discontinued use of nails completely in the sixties with only a hand full still using them today.
I started collecting nails with dates that meant something to me to later find out that are thousands of different nails used in The U.S.A . let alone the entire world. My collection started to really grow then. Start or add to your collection now. I will be listing other years as well to help you fill your collection.
Please use the Ask seller Questions link to get more details. I find myself occasionally wanting to list more information, but I am easily distracted by the three young Grand Daughters we are raising, and sometimes just lose my train of thought.I can also send you additional pictures if you give me your e mail address.
