Sir James Jeans

The

Mysterious

UNIVERSE

A fascinating interpretation of modern scientific theory by one of the foremost scientists of the 20th century

"Sir James Jeans has written one of the most arresting books of recent years—a real drama of science; its easy-flowing style will make it a favorite book of the layman and its discussion of fundamental problems will give allstudents of science and philosophy much serious thought."
—New Statesman
This brilliantly exciting example of scientific writing for the general reader by one of the truly great scientists of the 20th century became, on publication, a sensational bestseller. Sir James expounds with clarity and precision some of the most complex problems of modern science—relativity, infinite space, matter, radiation—ands in the final chapter "Into the Deep Waters" proposes his renowned philosophical conclusion that the universe appears to be the creation of a "pure mathematician."
This book ought to cause a--revolution in our thought . . The scientist, the philosopher, the theologian, even the artist and the poet, must all take account of it. The;: thinking man cannot ignore it."—New York Sun

SIR JAMES HOPWOOD JEANS, M.A., D.SC., Sc.D., LL.D., F.R.S., English astronomer and mathematical physicist, was born in London in 1877 and was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He went on to teach mathematics at Cambridge and Princeton and was professor of astronomy for the Royal Institution. In 1923 he became a research associate of the Mount Wilson Observatory in California. Sir James was a Fellow of the Royal Society, and was president of the Royal Astronomical Society from 1925 to 1927 and of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1934. He died in 1946.
In physics, Sir James developed the kinetic theory of gases and worked on the interrelation of radiation and free electrons. In astronomy, his special field was cosmogony. He developed theories of the effect of gravitational motion on the motion of stars, of the nature and formation of binary stars, spiral nebulae, giant and dwarf stars, and on the source of stellar energy. Sir James was the author of many distinguished books, the most widely known being those written for the general public: The Universe Around Us (1929) , The Mysterious Universe (1930) , and The Stars in Their Courses (1931) .
THE MYSTERIOUS UNIVERSE was first published in 1930. The text used in this volume is that of the revised edition of 1932.
