EDITORIAL TIMELY TOPICS
Dear Readers,
It's spring... and there's a certain fever in the air to get things done now. SPHERE has picked up the spirit of enthusiasm, and our April issue reflects this with two articles on up and coming topics.
The first is molas, bright panels of reverse applique created by the Cuna Indians. Natives of the Panama Coast, they produce spirited, splashy stitchery you may have seen in antique and craft shops. Now, mo/as are the thing in fashion and home decorating. And here's our introduction to molas—a stitchery project perfectly timed for those needle enthusiasts who have been working their way through conventional applique, crewel, quilting and embroidery.
Our second timely topic is a matter-of-fact (with emphasis on the fact) story about the new appliance efficiency labeling program. Proposed and activated by the U.S. Department of Commerce, the voluntary program is being supported by major appliance manufacturers as well as consumers. The labels, which will appear any day now, will provide comparative information on the power required to operate an appliance in specific relation to the output of service.
Air conditioners are the first appliances to be thusly tagged, though eventually it is hoped all major appliances will bear such helpful consumer information.
Leaving you with just a hint of all the things contained in this issue, let's skip on to May. Here, we promise some fun and games.
Our entertainment feature, an artists' party, comes complete with menus and serving schedules. The special bonus - for you as well as members of the SPHERE staff — is the artists' panel. A group of staffers spent a recent evening painting away on this project to prove that anyone could get involved with artistic creation.
The panel, as you'll see it in the May issue, is really the work of everyday people — even if they happen to work for a magazine. Here's another party suggestion we've tried and found true. So, start planning your guest list now and invite even those who claim they can't draw a straight line with a ruler!
