Description
Known as the patron saint of animals, the environment and one of the two patrons of Italy, he also was the founder of the Order of Friars Minor, more commonly known as the Franciscans.
While he was praying on the mountain of Verna, during a forty-day fast, Francis is said to have had a vision of the Exaltation of the Cross, as a result of which he received the stigmata.
Many of the stories that surround the life of St. Francis deal with his love for animals, these legends exemplify the Franciscan mode of charity and poverty as well as the saint's love of the natural world.
