Moringa oleifera

The Miracle Tree of Life, Moringa Tree, is called Mother's Best Friend.

Moringa Oleifera, commonly known simply as Moringa. Moringa is one of eco-friendly plants that help the world hunger and sick people. It is a soft-wooded tree that grows to about 20 feet tall, with corky bark and small feathery leaves. Its root is just like a Japanese wasabi or horseradish.

Moringa is entirely edible, from leaves to roots. Moringa plant is drought resistant and grows practically anywhere around the world—even lands with poor soil, near the sea and dry areas, and can even withstand severe drought once the plant is established.

Pods: Small pods eaten green, as green beans. For middle-sized pods, before the seeds distort the pod, take the seeds and use them as cooked beans, or roast them, as with peanuts; the seeds have a peanutty flavor. For old, mature pods, take the dry seeds, dehull them and grind them into an extremely nutritious flour.

The mature, dried seeds of M. oleifera yield what was considered the finest watch making quality lubricant available. The purified and strained oil is of very fine quality and does not gum or turn rancid. Only modern synthetic oils approach "Ben Oil" (or "Benzoil") in quality.

For water purification, take 1 to 1.5 seeds which haved matured and dried on the tree per 1 Quart of water. Grind the seed(s) into powder and add them to the water. Shake well. Allow to stand minimum 4 hours in direct sunlight. Carefully pour off resultant clean water and boil, as a secondary measure.

Flowers: Edible, and one of the best sources of nectar for Honeybees; highly recommended tree for beekeepers.

Leaves: One of the best - if not ~the~ best - sources of plant-based nutrition. Strip leaves off and remove as much stem as possible (it does not soften with cooking, reminding the diner of chewing on fine wire). Leaves can be eaten raw, used in salads, boiled (the water is nutritious), baked, stir-fried or used in any recipe calling for Spinach (although M. oleifera leaves are about 11 times more nutritious than Spinach!).

Root: The young taproot may be harvested and the covering scraped off for use as a Horseradish substitute (although I personally value my trees too highly to kill them for their roots!) The raw mature leaves may also, upon occasion, have quite a spicy Horseradish tang to them.

Wikipedia

Moringa Oleifera is a small, shrub or tree that can reach 12m (36 ft) in height at maturity and can live for up to 20 years. A short but intense life...A life in the fast lane: Moringa is perhaps the fastest-growing of all trees as it can reach 3m (9 ft) in just 10 months after the seed is planted. It has deep roots, and therefore it can survive in dry regions, and a wide-open crown with a single stem.

Moringa is a healer, food magician, beauty and beautician, a plant with surprising water purification capabilities, a best friend and humanitarian who works for so little. It is one of the most useful trees on earth. Moringa makes a major contribution to human and animal health; in many cases, it can mean the difference between life and death. Absolutely no negative effects to daily consumption of Moringa leaves have ever been reported.

As a healing plant, Moringa is even more amazing. There is much evidence from around the world, from various traditions and cultures that have used this Miracle Tree for so many ailments and troubles.

The leaves are believed to have a stabilizing effect on blood pressure and control glucose levels. They are also used to treat anxiety, diarrhea and inflammation of the colon, skin infections, scurvy, intestinal parasites, and many other conditions.

The green pods, the leaves and the flowers are used in a variety of Thai dishes, such as curries, stir-fries, soups, omelets and salads.

One funny thing M. oleifera trees may do: The trees usually begin to bloom at 18 months, plus or minus. The first time they begin to bloom, the branches on some trees may become very flexible, almost rubbery, even to the point of being able to tie the branch into a loose knot. If your branches do so, and you do not want this behavior, stake upright until they have bloomed and set pods. You may also be able to re-form the branch by hand sufficiently to make it stand on its own.

Growing from seed: Soak seeds overnight before planting. Seeds can be started indoors, but must be moved outdoors as soon as practical. The seedlings grow tall and thin, and need wind to strengthen the trunk, lest they fall over. Seedlings and young trees are a favorite browse for deer and other herbivores, and so must be protected. Seed sown directly in the ground produces a very deep taproot, which will continue until enough water/moisture is reached, even at the expense of not growing the trunk or leaves. Because of this taproot, the tree is very drought-resistant, once established, and will recover even from a hard freeze (hence one of its names, the "Never-Die" Tree). However, container trees can be killed by 8 hours @ 26 degrees. Trees often grow 15 feet the first year, and may reach a maximum height of 65 feet. The wood is brittle, so the trees should not be planted near houses, where a limb might break off in the wind.

Care: M. oleifera prefers Full/Partial Sun and may be planted as little as 1 foot apart to make a living, harvestable fence. Unless grown as a specimen, the trees should be cut back to 3 feet once they reach 6-9 feet; the trunk will branch profusely, and these branches should be pinched or pruned when they reach 12-18 inches length.

M. oleifera will tolerate many other plants to be grown close to it, as apparently it uses nutrients other plants do not.

As each order is packed and prepared separately you will pay the quoted S/H charges individually per item. If you buy the same species in that item it does calculate out the discount (i.e.: additional item $7.61). My stores' combined shipping is built in for same items rather than a varied selection. S/H includes postage, USDA certification and inspection, proper packing and delivery to Airport for prompt delivery. I can't really change any of these. If you want one of this and one of that, it is hard to discount much as each different species requires it's own prep, packing, then at USDA each has to be unwrapped and inspected then repacked. USDA requires me to clean and prepare every last piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on the other side of the island. It takes my wife and I, a day to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day we drive around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post Office to drop off. It takes the same work with the same type item if you can understand.

After you purchase  After you Receive your Items.

LIVE PLANTS ARE PERISHABLE.

For this reason uninsurable.

When you order a plant we assume you are prepared to care for it. Please have potting media and a container prepared for your plant before it arrives. Shipping can be stressful on a plant, and any mistakes that you make upon arrival can stress the plant further, which is not good. Proper care is critical upon arrival. It is your responsibility to know how to care for the plant.

Not every plant that I order through the mail survives, and I am aware of that and accept the risk when I order. This is the risk that you as the buyer accept, because there is no way to know what kind of conditions it will endure in the trip to your door. My responsibility ends when a live plant is delivered to your door. Live arrival is guaranteed, eternal survival is up to you.

Please Do NOT email me a week after potting your plant, and make a claim it arrived damaged. From delivery confirmation, you have only 48 hours from delivery confirmation to make any claim.

All claims need to be supported with Photos of the damaged plant(s) as packed/unpacked, the box if damaged, the packing materials and any documents. I am very reasonable and understanding, anything can happen to small plants in transit.

The expense to send it to you is most of your payment. To send any replacement(s), I try to piggy back with your next order.

Replacement is not an option for CUSTOMS SEIZURE.

ALL OF MY ITEMS ARE SHIPPED USDA CERTIFIED WITHIN THE U.S.- USDA and USPS fees are included in the actual cost of shipping and Handling.

Please do not leave a 1 or 2 in my detailed seller ratings for postage fees or any reason really because I will block you from any further purchases. I ship items the best and least expensive option. These are coming from Hawaii. The only thing inexpensive here in Hawaii are my items!! I do ship all my items promptly via best method--if you feel like the combined shipping fee is wrong, please wait to be invoiced and check back with me-I value your business and will work diligently to keep you satisfied. I am very generous and reasonable with reasonable people, just ask.

Seed is a live product which depends on many important related grower skills such as proper planting time, seed depth, type of soil, irrigation, proper use of fertilizers, weed controls, fungicides, insecticides, disease free soil, and reasonable weather conditions during the growing period. Germination is affected by such factors as temperature, moisture content, light intensity and contamination of planting media. These factors are totally out of the seller's control and are the buyer's responsibility and risk. Consequentially, the seller cannot unconditionally guarantee seed to perform properly regardless of conditions or the buyer's methods or mistakes.
