SUISSE LANGENTHAL Commemorative Plate 1781 3 Swiss Cantons
Description: You are bidding on a modern (1977) commemorative plate produced produced by the Suisse Langenthal or Porzellanfabrik Langenthal AG of Langenthal, Switzerland
The heavy plate features 3 men and the symbols of the original 3 Swiss Cantons (States). The three Swiss men are from the original 3 cantons (states) of Switzerland: Uri (symbol is the cow), Schwyz (symbol is the cross) and Unterwalden (symbol is the key). The illustration style is designed to look old, scratched and worn. Possibly it is a reproduction of an old piece of artwork, used for this decorative plate, for display purpose. NOTE: this is a modern piece produced in 1977.
The central image is surrounded by Old German text which reads: "1781 Da Demut weint und Hochmut Lacht da war der Schweizer Mund gemacht und die Stolzheit wurde zu nichten gebracht."
The English translation is: "Given that humiliation cries and arrogance laughs the Swiss decided not to tolerate anymore and the proud ones were destroyed." We infer that the Swiss wanted their independence and destroyed those who wanted to rule them" (the Austrians).
The outer rim of the plate features a floral design of green, yellow and brown stylized flowers and some border graphics, i.e., hatching marks.
The circular base of the commemorative plate is stamped with the Green Backstamp of the Langenthal Company, and reads top to bottom:
