Osôshiki – Winner of 5 Japanese Academy Awards - A look at how Japanese deal with death, it’s both a series of joyous contradictions and a robust comedy, a film that is quintessentially Japanese.

At the beginning of the film the father-in-law of the protagonist dies unexpectedly of a heart attack. The remainder of the film is episodic, moving from one incident to another over the course of the three-day funeral, which is held (as is customary) in the home. These incidents contrast the old ways and the new ways, young and old, ritual ceremony and true feelings, most often comically, but sometimes with real poignancy.

An enormous success in Japan. It won five Japanese Academy Awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor. It was nominated in a further five categories and also came first in the annual Kinema Junpo critics' poll.
