In the midst of Japan's rising economy of the mid-1980s, the itinerant Tora-san gets drunk with a hard-working salaryman named Tominaga. After an hour commute, the two sleep off their night's revelry at Tominaga's home in Ibaraki Prefecture. When Tominaga abruptly disappears the man’s wife asks Tora-san to help find him, they travel to Kagoshima where Tora-san falls in love with her, and secretly hopes the husband will not be found.
Yoji Yamada tries to show a darker, almost distasteful side to Tora-san, that he secretly hopes Tominaga never comes back so that he can have Fujiko for himself.
