WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1988) - REMASTERED
Price:  $15.00
Description:
Arashi ga oka - Among Japanese filmmaker
Yoshishige Yoshida's darkest films is this brooding and tempestuous adaptation
of Emily Bronte’s classic novel. Inspired by traditional Japanese ghost tales,
Yoshida interprets Wuthering Heights in a medieval Japanese folklore context and
Brontë's classic tale of ill-fated love becomes a fable about the dangers of an
unnatural obsession with the past.
Onimaru is an orphan boy taken in by a group of priests who worship the
Mountain of Fire and try to appease the gods of anger. He’s in love with Kinu,
the beautiful daughter of a local family. When she marries an heir to a rival
family, his heart is broken. When she dies in childbirth, Onimaru loses what is
left of his mind.
A lush and darkly sumptuous film and Yoshida's only jidaigeki, or period
film, Wuthering Heights was also to be one of the last great roles of legendary
actor Yusaku Matsuda, who died the year after the film's release.
