Suna no utsuwa - Based on the novel "Inspector Imanishi Investigates" by Seicho Matsumoto. The Castle of Sand, is a fascinating mystery/thriller which subtly weaves three separate stories together.

This large-scale production follows two detectives, a veteran and a rookie, investigating the murder of a an elderly cop at a Tokyo railway station. They have no leads or motives until they encounter a young composer whose tragic past may hold the clues they need to solve the case.

Although initially it may seem a standard 'police story' it evolves quite handsomely into a complex and tightly structured human drama about unsuccessfully attempting to escape your past. Both moving and suspenseful, Castle of Sand was named one of the best Japanese films of all time by Kinema Junpo (a Japanese film magazine which began publication in July 1919).
