drama about legendary swordsman Tsukahara Bokuden, renowned in Japan as the
finest swordsman of his day and widely regarded as a kensei (sword
saint).
Over 100 duels, 13 with steel swords, he served on the
battlefield 37 times without receiving any injuries more serious than minor
arrow wounds. The men he is counted as defeating number 212. The son of a Shinto
priest, he was always practicing his sword skills as a child and as a young man
began forging a reputation for himself as a fearless warrior.
He was the classic
knight-errant; a rich nobleman, he travelled the Japanese countryside, often
with a full entourage. Founder of a new Kashima style of fencing, he also served
as an instructor of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru.
