The Zatoichi television series is just as good as the film series that preceded it. In fact many may prefer the television series.
Since each episode is reduced to 45 minutes, you get to the climatic fight a lot sooner, and since the plot has to be simplified to accommodate less characters, the films are easier to follow.

Episode 7. FROM LONG AGO
Making good on a promise to the girl he left behind, Ichi returns to the village of his youth. When suddenly attacked by bandits he defends himself and cuts down the assailants, leading to a vendetta mounted by their leader, a vicious killer with no regard for human life. The gang has robbed and murdered indiscriminately as a prelude to hunting down the blind man. Then they invade the town, planning to eliminate all witnesses to their crimes.
Episode 8. HERE COMES THE MASSEUR
After a series of financial setbacks, a feudal lord betroths his very young daughter to the heir of a neighboring clan in order to receive a cash payment and save his clan from being abolished by the shogunate. After dreaming of ghosts in a series of nightmares, she escapes and joins up with Ichi where she feels safe. The clan’s search for the princess runs into complications as a vengeful gang boss seeks to take Ichi’s life. The tension mounts as the clan’s best swordsman lurks in the shadows!
