The area around the Ries Crater, in Germany, is the source for Moldavites -- the age of the crater, 14.7 million years old, is identical with the age of Moldavites. Moldavites are a beautiful dark green color and are the only known gemstone of extraterrestrial origin. Moldavites are the rarest of gems, rarer even than diamonds, rubies or emeralds. Since their origin is due to a meteor impact event, further discovery of new deposits seems very unlikely.
