Death Valley is a fabulous place to visit. It's the lowest and driest spot in North America. It has strange rocks that seem to move by themselves at night. It has vast areas of salt. It has flowers that bloom only once every hundred years. You can leave footprints in the earth that last for decades. And it has the ever-shifting dunes of sand. A footprint in these dunes may only last for a few moments. If you want to see sights that you'll see nowhere else on earth, go to Death Valley. Just don't go in July! This is one of a series of my Plein Aire paintings of various locations in California. There are many beautiful sights to inspire a painter: the powerful Pacific Ocean, the river rapids and glass-calm lakes, the rolling foothills and majestic Sierra Nevada mountains, and the strangely serene deserts.
