Tibetan Gau Ghau .925 Sterling Silver and Lapis Lazuli
Condition: New
Price: $365.00

This piece of Buddhist jewelry is an exquisitely handcrafted .925 sterling silver and lapis lazuli Tibetan gau pendant. It would make an ideal yoga practitioner's gift,
since the pendant box proclaims the mantra of great compassion, Om Mani Padme Hum. It
measures almost three inches from top to bottom, 2.25 inches side to
side and 1.25 inches deep. The interior space to hold your personal
items is approximately 2" x 1.5" x .25 inches deep, and the whole piece
weighs 91.4 grams, which is almost 3 ounces! 12 fine pieces of lapis surround the mantra, and a one lapis nugget adorns the
center whilst another pear-shaped nugget decorates the base. A "gau",
or small box for storing ritual objects, is typically worn as jewelry
in Buddhist custom and represents one's personal altar. The gau opens to hold blessings, prayers, or small sacred mementos.
I
show the gau with the back piece removed and beside the main piece so
you can see the edges of the box. Over time, as customers have handled the piece, the edges have become slightly warped due to the thinness of the silver. It does not affect the beauty or functionality of this piece, and would happen in normal usage anyway.
This piece is the real deal, .925 silver. Even
though this item is Tibetan, it is NOT made of "Tibetan Silver" which
as we all know, is really Nickle Silver. I purchased this in Mumbai,
India in 2001.
The back features a double dorje. The double dorje is one of the premiere symbols
for Tantric Buddhism. It represents undefiled
pure consciousness, the pristine awareness
beyond conceptual thinking. These are qualities
of the enlightened mind. In Sanskrit the word
used to denote the basis for that condition is 'sunyata',
usually translated as emptiness or void. It is a
state which cannot be destroyed or corrupted,
has no beginning or end, etc. At the same time
it can destroy all negative and deluded
conditions and is the basis for all phenomena.
