Quality Antique Islamic Qur’an Koran Box Gold Silver Inlay Damascus
This box was
constructed to contain a Qur’an (Koran). It was probably made at the request of
a sultan or a high dignitary, in order for them to donate it to a religious
foundation or mosque. The box, which is supported on four legs, consists of a
square wooden box covered in brass plates. The lid is attached on the back by
two hinges and has a buckle on the front through which to add a lock. Each
plate is decorated and features inscriptions in gold and silver inlay. The outside
is covered in Arabic inscriptions in kufic and thuluth script that protrude
from the surface. In the Muslim world, Quran’s were usually kept in boxes
(sunduq) or in freestanding metal cabinets.
Beautiful
inlays of gold, silver and copper. Approximately 9” square by 7” high. Probably
late 18th to early 19th Century from Aleppo Syria and
used in the Umayyad Mosque. Very good condition.
