Up for auction we have a stunning, rare antique
Sheffield Atkin Brothers Silverplate
Biscuit Box
Stamped HA EA EP
With other traditional markings
This 1800's Biscuit Box was designed securely fastened to an incredibly pretty riticulated-edge base raised up by four beautifully detailed claw feet. Has GREAT presence, style & functionality.
Designed as a biscuit box, being as it has a finely crafted, snugly fitting lid, it would also probably make a very nice tea caddy, or humidor. Nevertheless, useful as it is, it makes a very luxe looking decorative piece as well.
To offer a little history on its makers: The Atkin Brothers Buscuit Box comes from a firm in Sheffield, England that traces its establishment to Thomas Law in the mid 18th century. It was succeeded by Henry Atkin and John Oxley trading as Atkin, Oxley & Co. In 1840 Henry Atkin continued the trade as Henry Atkin & Co at 32 Howard Street, Sheffield. After his death, his brothers Harry Wrigth Atkin, Edward Thomas Atkin and Frank Shaw Atkin continued the business as Atkin Brothers. The firm was converted in 1925 into a limited liability company under the style of Atkin Brothers (Silversmiths) Ltd.
The HA mark on the bottom is for Henry or Harry Atkin; The EA mark on the bottom is for Edward Atkin; The EP mark on the bottom is for Electroplate (the type of silverplating done by such early silversmiths); and the little star like stamp in between was a mark customarily used by this particular silversmith, but we don't know what it is for. There's also another tiny little stamp that you'll see placed just above those other stamps to the upper right. We're not sure what that one is for, but if you research English hallmarks and trademarks for silver, you will find examples of these in use there. So, with all that...
Please note by our photographs normal signs of wear, and too that this is an exceptional piece in great condition for its age.
