Up for auction we have a
Collectible Antique Pitman Arm
Numbered:
5679784 1035 F36
This cast irn part has something to do with the steering mechanisms in a car, truck or tractor; but probably a tractor since I found this in an early 1900's barn under a whole big bunch of grease, oil, dust and hay.
The Pitman arm is a steering component in an automobile, truck or tractor which is the linkage attached to the steering gear sector shaft, that converts the angular motion of the sector shaft into the linear motion needed to steer the wheels. It is supported by the sector shaft and supports the drag link or center link with a ball joint and transmits the motion it receives from the steering box into the drag or center link, causing it to move left or right to turn the wheels in the appropriate direction.
Nevertheless, this is a great early driving machine part that any mechanic will probably know what to do with, and would make a nice addition to an early auto part collection or even a terrific paper weight down at the shop, since it is solid and weighs in at 1 pound 12 ounces! And true too, it is kind of pretty with its smooth curves.
It measures approximately 9 inches from end to end around the curve
And is about 7/8 inches thick
Has a nice feeling in the hand and would appear to still be useful for one who does mechanical work on early vintage or antique trucks, cars or tractors.
Thanks for looking and good luck bidding! And to the one who told me what this thing actually is - Thank You!
