For your consideration is this vintage Charlie McCarthy tin wind up walker made by
'Marx Toy Company of New York'. It is in very good condition for a 70 year old tin dummy.
The ventriloquist 'Edgar Bergen' used his dummy 'Charlie' on his radio show from 1936 to 1955.
Later in '50s he made many TV appearances with him, Mortimer Snerd and the 'Knucklehead Smiff'
dummy, a favorite of mine. Edgar's real child was Candace Bergen of 'Murphy Brown' fame.
As a young girl Candace thought Charley was her real brother. As for the toy, the lithograph
is bold and shiny, with scattered scratches and edge wear and a factory paint touch up that
is very professional. A Marx logo is found on his backside. The wind-up mechanism works very
well and will for quite a while. The mechanism is strong and one does not have to be afraid
to play with it . Charley stands 8- 1/2" tall and when wound he sways back and forth moving his
jaw like a ventriloquists doll. I am not a toy expert but I have tried to described the toys condition to
best of my ability. Please inspect all photos and judge for yourself and ask any questions you
may have as I cannot always list each flaw in same way you may view them.
It is a great toy that displays and plays well too. This highly sought after
toy and is priced to sell so do not let it get away at this low cost.
Please take a few moments to view other vintage toys I have listed.
