WHOLE LINSEEDS – 2.5KG (HUMAN BAKERY GRADE)
The benefits of feeding linseeds to horses have been appreciated for years. Linseed is high in oil and very low in starch thus providing a safer energy source compared to cereal feeds. This makes it suitable for all horses and ponies, including those prone to laminitis, tying up or those that are excitable when fed cereals. Linseed maintains healthy skin condition and produces a beautiful shiny coat. It has also been reported to provide benefits to horses prone to skin conditions such as rain rot and Queensland itch. Characteristics of a lack of essential fatty acids may include a dull coat with dry itchy skin and cracking hooves.
Horses that may benefit from Linseeds:
- Show horses
- Endurance horses
- Those in work in winter
- Those with sensitive digestion
- For a shiny coat without the fizz
- Poor doers
- Horses with dull coats, itchy skin or cracking hooves
Do you need to supplement Linseed?
If your horses are predominantly on good pasture then no, your horses are likely to be getting plentiful anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids from grass. If your horses have hay as the main forage then the answer is yes as curing hay destroys the omega-3 oils.
How Does Linseed Help?
Linseed is unique among feeds because of its high concentration of Omega 3 fatty acids, including alpha-linolenic acid. Horses need a minimum level of key fats to maintain good health. These essential fatty acids are Omega 3 and Omega 6. A horse cannot produce these fats in their body, thus they are an essential part of his diet. Linseed is a rich source of fibre, especially soluble fibre which gels when exposed to water (similar to psyllium). It is helpful in preventing impaction and sand colic as the fibre swells and the gel like consistency traps and suspends sand, bringing it out of the system. The fibre is rich in lignans, substances believed to be linked to the cancer fighting effects of a high fibre diet. It also has anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Linseed is 26% protein and rich in amino acids like methionine and lysine. It has good levels of antioxidants, including vitamin E.
How much to feed each day?
1 – 2 cups per day boiled or ground/cracked
BOIL: 1 cup linseed & 4 cups of hot or boiling water. Cook uncovered in microwave for around 15 minutes in a large container. Seeds will swell and form a jelly like substance. 1 cup of linseed makes around 2.5 cups of boiled linseed.
