'' FROM ANCIENT HANDS ''by Rich Moyers
This piece represents a compilation of various forms of spiritual and artistic aesthetics created by the ''Ancient Ones,'' also known as the Anasazi People. The stone figures were carved by the Anasazi before 1450 AD and represent some of the earliest examples of ''Kachina'' or spirit dolls related to nature's secrets.
The petroglyphs in the piece were assembled from several sites located across the upper Southwestern United States such as Wapatki National Monument near Flagstaff, Arizona and several sites in Southeastern Utah.
The carefully made woven willow and split twig figure was found in a cave in the Grand Canyon and represents a game animal.
Such figures may have played an important part in hunting rituals or ''magic''ceremonies, as these animals were relied upon for sustenance. This figure has been carbon-dated to a time approximately 4000 years ago and made by a ''Desert Archaic'' people who were most probably the ancestors of the''Anasazi.''
