These wonderful chairs
are not lacking in craftsmanship! The
wood is ornately carved and the seats and back feature thick leather attached
to the chair frame with large 1.25” iron nailheads.
This style of chair was
originally developed in Italy in the late 15th to early 16th century, an adaptation of the ancient Roman curule chair. The design featured a ornately carved chair with crossed legs, creating a wavy silhouette. They came to be predominantly reserved for European royalty and chairs of state. Other names
associated with these portable chairs are X-frame chair, Bishop’s chair and Dantesca chair.
There is a bit of
additional interesting history associated with these two chairs. They were presented as a gift to
a U.S. Army General by Francisco Franco’s military attache’ in the late
1960’s. The chairs accompanied the U.S. General from Spain to the states on the USS United States in 1969--two weeks before it’s last
sailing. It docked in the New York harbor on the same day that man
landed on the moon. The chairs have been
in the possession of the General until now.
Measurements:
34” from floor to top of
back
17.5” from floor to
scooped seat
22.75” wide at arms
16” wide at seat
Both chairs are in VERY GOOD vintage condition.
There are no breaks,
splits or repairs to the wood frame; no rips or repairs to the leather. They are sturdy and strong and very
comfortable.
