This amazing Townsend & Compton Pewter Plate is in excellent condition. Ca. 1800-1811 it measures 8 1/4 inches in diameter and 3/16 inches deep. Excellent condition having typical knife scratches from wear and use. There is also some marking presumable from exposure to low temperatures and moisture.
Up for auction is an eight and one quarter inch pewter plate with the signature of famous eighteenth and nineteenth century London pewterers John Townsend and his son-in-law Thomas Compton. This amazing Townsend & Compton Pewter Plate is in excellent condition. Ca. 1800-1811. The plate has been well cared for there are minor scratches and typical discoloration of the pewter, which are both only typical of two hundred year old pewter plates. The three marks consist of (1) the pseudo hallmarks of the Townsend and Compton firm, (2) the crowned Tudor rose with Made in London, and (3) the Townsend and Compton Hallmark as their specific signature. This is a beautiful eighteenth century pewter handwork that tells the story of its origins as well as the history that has kept it in circulation for about two hundred years.
