Up for purchase is a hardback copy of American Indian Life: By Several of Its Students edited by Elsie Clews Parsons. It was published in 1922 by B. W. Huebsch, Inc. This classic work is still in print, and this is the rare First Edition copy that was originally issued without a dust jacket in a slipcase. This large book measures 8.5 x 11.25-inches in size and contains 419 pages including color and b&w illustrations by C. Grant LaFarge. Nicely bound with dark blue(leather appearing) cloth spine and corner tips, and rough cut side and bottom edges with smooth red top edges. This book is a delightful read to anyone interested in early American Indian life. Most of the entries are written by professional anthropologists who spent a considerable amount of time living among their subjects. Consequently, the articles contain a great deal of insight that is rarely found in most writings on American Indian cultures. See photos for contents.

This is an exceptionally nice copy. There is a scant bit of cover surface wear with three tiny spots on the rear cover. The book covers extent about 1/4-inch beyond the page edges, so there is a slight rounding to the cover corners, but no bumps or exposure to the corners. On the back of the front cover is a California Academy of Sciences gift book label and a small "16941" (accession number) written along the spine edge at the bottom of the title page. Otherwise clean throughout with no other markings, soiling, or age spotting. The pages are in excellent condition except for page 415 (in the Illustrator's notes section) that has some fore-edge creases and a 1/2-inch closed tear about 1/2-inch in from the fore-edge. Most importantly, there are no cracks to the interior hinges and the binding remains tight and square, which is rarely found these days on this edition. Definitely one of the best copies around of this classic title!
