See my other auctions for many more antique bookends in nice condition!Up for purchase is a set of polychrome bronze clad bookends known as Darby and Joan. The term "Darby and Joan" was in common use in the UK during the 18th and 19th century to denote a devoted old couple living out their retired years in quiet, if impoverished, contentment. The bookends were manufactured circa 1925 by the Armor Bronze Company with their manufacturer's mark on the rear base and their sticker tags on the bottoms. There is another mark on the rear base that may be the name of the sculptor, but I cannot make out who it is. The base measures 4.5 x 4.25-inches in size and it stands 7.5-inches in height. One bookend weighs 52 ounces and the other one weighs 51.8 ounces. See photos for more details. These bookends are in excellent condition. There are no cracks, chips, or dents in the metal surfaces, which is unusual on bookends of this age. The presence of the tags on the bottoms is further evidence of little wear. The only visible wear is rubbing of the paint on some of the high surface areas. An exceptionally nice set! Buyer's have the right to request from me other forms of payment. Shipping and handling is $15.00 via USPS Priority mail. Books usually ship out within one day of receipt of payment. Note to foreign buyers: The posted shipping is for U.S. only shipments.
