You are bidding on a rarely seen copy of Traditional Songs of the Zunis: With English and Indian Text transcribed and harmonized by Carlos Troyer. It was published in 1904 by The Wa-Wan Press of Newton Center, MA with no other dates or printings indicated. This is a large booklet that measures 10.75 x 14-inches in size, and contains 19 pages that include four different Zuni songs. It is hand-bound by string--seen in The Sunrise Call photo below. Troyer, an early ethnomusicologist, visited the Zuni in 1888 accompanied by anthropologist Frank Hamilton Cushing, who had lived among the Zuni. However, it was not until 1904 that Troyer published this first booklet of Zuni songs, followed by 12 additional Zuni songs published in the same year by the Theo. Presser Company as 16 single song sheets. I believe this publication was the first time authentic Indian music was presented to the public for purchase. This is an extremely rare publication seldom seen for sale. See photos for contents. This booklet is in worn condition, but complete. The cover is mostly split along the seam along with several edge tears along the back seam. The cover has some mild soiling and a water spot to the top spine corner. The interior pages are in much better condition with damage limited to some corner creases and rubbing along the bottom page edges. Clean interior with no markings or soiling, but pages have age-darkened a bit. Overall a good copy of this extremely rare music publication.
