Popular Science Monthly was founded in May 1872 by Edward L. Youmans intended to appeal to the educated layman. Early issues were mostly reprints of English periodicals.

In 1900 James McKeen Cattell became the editor. Cattell was an academician and continued the practice of publishing articles for more educated readers. By 1915 due to the lack of general appeal and limited interest subscriptions declined drastically. In 1915 the name "Popular Science" was acquired by The Modern Publishing Company which wanted the name for a general audience magazine on science and technology.

Current subscribers, instead of Popular Science Monthly, were given a new journal titled Scientific Monthly that would continue the academic tradition and which eventually became Science magazine.

Popular Science Monthly, under new editorial control, underwent dramatic changes. What had been a scholarly journal of eight to ten articles in a 100 page issue with ten to twenty illustrations, became instead a much more colorful magazine that had many short, easy to read articles with hundreds of illustrations.

With the newer look and appeal to a wider audience the circulation doubled in the first year.
