The Bureau of American Ethnography was established by the Smithsonian Institute to sponsor and publish research on Native Americans. Lasting from 1879-1965, it published many thousands of pages of quality research on a huge variety of subjects in the form of the Bulletins and Annual Reports.

The purpose of the Bureau of American Ethnography was to make available publications of various research in ethnology, archaeology, and general anthropology, especially the history, material culture, customs, and religious practices of the American Indian. Also included in this series are the studies on Eskimos and other ethnic groups living in lands under the jurisdiction of the United States.

While the bulk of material in this collection focuses on the history of Indian tribes within the United States, there is substantive information on the Indian tribes of Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, Central America, Canada, Southern Yucatan, and Northern Honduras. Many of the bulletins and reports also contain line drawings and photographic illustrations.
