Own an exceedingly rare piece
of Berkeley vs. Stanford rivalry history. This celluloid pinback button was
either sold or handed out at Cal Berkeley Bears home Football games against the
then Stanford University Indians, likely sometime in the 1940's or 1950's. This
is a piece of Berkeley history they would just as soon forget, remnants of
memorabilia such as this are almost non-existent now. Much of the memorabilia
with the "scalp" reference was destroyed, and Berkeley University adamantly
denies any involvement in the production or distribution of anything with such a
reference, although they can't deny die-hard Bears fans having had a hand in it.
From 1930 to 1972 the Stanford University athletic
teams adopted the name "Indian". The name was dropped in 1972 after outcry from
American Indian students and community, and a vote by the student senate.
Images, slogans, and items like this were a major catalyst in the admonishment
of the name.
This 1.5 Inch in diameter button is in beautiful
condition for it's age. The cartoon art, though inappropriate, is fantastically
rendered, and the colors remain vibrant, pictures simply don't do it justice.
The metal on the back of the button has suffered discoloration, and although it
looks like rust, it is not. The button is sturdy, and suffers from no markings,
dents, dings, or awkward discoloration to the image. This is a dream come true
for Berkeley Memorabilia collectors, Stanford Memorabilia collectors, and
Pinback Button collectors alike, as an opportunity to own a piece this rare, and
in this type of condition doesn't present itself very often!
