Jewelry manufacturer and retailer Tillander had a most illustrious and colorful history, having attained prominence creating objects for Imperial and aristocratic clients, including Tsar Nicholas II, during the waning years of the Russian Empire. Alexander Gustavovich Tillander (born1837-1918) left Finland at the age of eleven and came to St Petersburg to work as an apprentice goldsmith and, upon his becoming master in 1860, established a workshop in the city. The quality of his craftsmanship did not go unnoticed, and soon Tillander was supplying the best retailers of the day, including the Court Jeweler, Bolin. By 1890, he established his own retail premises on Bolshaya Morskaya (moving to Nevsky Prospekt in 1911), and his son Alexander Alexandrovich Tillander (1870-1943) joined the operation following his apprenticeship. The firm’s output was diverse and included a wide range of jewelery, objects of vertu, functional objects in enameled gold or silver, cigarette cases, and jetons. From 1909 until the start of the First World War, Tillander received regular orders from the Emperor’s Cabinet, mostly for presentation jewelry; the Empress and other Romanovs were clients as well.
Following the Revolution and the death of the firm’s eighty-year-old founder, the younger Tillanders relocated the business to Helsinki under the name A. Tillander, which became Aktiebolaget A. Tillander in the 1920s. Maintaining a high standard of production during this period, the firm enjoyed worldwide prominence in competition with Cartier, Boucheron and Tiffany.
