Thomas and Nancy Lincoln lived in a simple log cabin with One Window,  One Door, a chimney and a hard-packed dirt floor. The Lincolns had one daughter, Sarah, who was two years old when they added a son  to their family on the morning of February 12th, 1809. They Named him Abraham Lincoln, after his Paternal grandfather. Lincoln remembered nothing of Sinking Springs Farm, his Kentucky birthplace and home for the first years of his life. When he was still a toddler, his father moved his family to Knob Creek, and again built a rough log cabin for their home.

Abraham was born to a hard and difficult life. He and his sister were required to work on the family farm. Abraham's earliest memory was of working all day, dropping pumpin seeds amid the corn rows that were planted ahead of them. That night a storm swept through the hills surrounding the valley where the farm lay, and though no rain fell in the valley itself, the water rushed down through the gorges and completely washed away all the seed that they had worked so hard to plant.

Because of chores, Abraham and his siter were unable to attend school regularly. It was a common life: his parents were uneducated  and could neither read nor write, but Abraham's mother would often recite long passages from the bible that she had memorized. Although Abraham's father did not value education, Nancy encouraged her children to attend school as often as they could.

It was a two-mile walk through the woods and acrosss streams to the one-room schoolhouse where Abraham would begin to learn to read. His teachers made a significant impact on the young Abraham, enough that even years later he remembered their names: Zachariah Riney and, later Caleb Hazel. The school was a "Blab School," where students of all ages were gathered together and would recite their lessons aloud.

The days were long, but the years were short. Abraham grew up hunting raccoons in the woods, fishing in the creek, searching for honey and helpinh his father as he could. It was the only life he knew....
