Antique Victorian German (Hamburg) Alarm Clock c1880 This is a rare and unique piece of clockmaking history. It has a very clever arming and resetting mechanism. The alarm is set by a centre ring under the hands, for an accurate alarm, the time is set on the hands first then the ring is turned until the alarm sounds. For a rough guide the central alarm setting ring is marked 1 to 12.   At night the alarm is set by winding the top left arbour, the more you wind the long the alarm will sound, there is no off button. This design was adaptable for personal use (short wind) or to ensure servants were adequately roused in their wing of the house (long wind). Once the alarm has stopped, it will not reset until it is rewound. The alarm is loud and will wake the soundest sleeper.   The veneered case is in good condition with only one fault, there is a small repair (I think) to the veneer at the top left corner shown highlighted in the first photo.  It has been quite well done and does not detract from this imposing clock. The dial has many years of dirt accumulation as can be seen in the photos.   The clock is in full working order and keeping good time, it was stripped and serviced last year and will last many years before requiring another.
