Vertex Original WW2 Issue WWW Spec Watch Working

Among the British Army watches, the W.W.W.s are by far the most esteemed, possibly because they were the first wrist watches specially designed for general British Army service. Prior to this civilian wrist watches were used, which were not always suitable for requirements.

At the time the W.W.W.s were ordered, only very few British watch factories were still in business. Of those few, instead of watches, many produced aviation and navy instruments and fuses. Therefore all 12 well known W.W.W.s originate from Swiss manufacturers:

Thommen Sa, Fabrique d'Horlogerie, Waldenburg was established in 1859 by Gedeon Thommen and Louis Tschopp who took over the Societe d' Horlogerie de Waldenburg. The company became G. Thommen when Gedeon Thommen was sole owner. Gedeon Thommen died in 1890. In 1893 Thommen Marks were registered by Alph. Thommen for watch movements and cases. Alphonse Thommen, Gedeon's son, was now owner and managing director.

In 1935 the company was trading as Thommens Watch Co. Ltd. The1949 listing for the company showed it as Thommen SA, Fabrique D'Horlogerie. In 1951 as Revue-Thommen and also Thommen SA, Revue. Thommen was also listed in the early 1950's with Wittnauer (Majestic). By 1953 Roland Straumann was president of the Board of Directors.

This watch was issued during WW2, probably to an RAF navigator/pilot. My father was a navigator, he was issued the Cyma version. This watch was made to the same specifications as Omega, IWC and other well known brands in the WWW range, this watch is much rarer than the Omega or IWC version.

Thommen have been specialising in aircraft instrumentation but have now re-entered the prestigious watch market, Click here to see range
