In this moving story of heroism, Dr Aidan MacCarthy recalls his harrowing experiences as a Japanese POW. Captured in Java in 1942, MacCarthy ingeniously provided treatment for sick fellow prisoners despite terrible conditions and lack of medicines and equipment.

When MacCarthy was sent to the japanese mainland in 1944his boat was torpedoed - miraculously he survived. But a more amazing escape was to come when the Americans dropped the second atom bomb on Nagasaki where he was held prisoner. Again he escaped and here tells the remarkable story of his war years.
