This high quality
compact diffraction spectroscope with fixed slit & fixed
focus is design for examining which parts of white light
are absorbed by a gemstone (as well as by other materials).
Light enters through a narrow slit and is then diffracted
by a thin film of diffraction grating material. This produces
a linear spectrum image with a generally larger view of
the red part than a prism spectroscope. It breaks up the
light that is being transmitted from a gemstone to its spectral
colors. The process allows you to see the various wavelengths
absorbed by the gemstone to know what elements are contained
in the gemstone that are causing the absorption.
It helps in separating
ruby (chrome) against red or pink sapphire (iron), distinguishing
the naturally colored diamonds from those that have been
irradiated and identifying natural stones from synthetics
by the stone's selective absorption of certain wavelengths.
This handheld instrument can be use on loose or mounted
stone and considered as the one of the most important tools
in identifying gemstones.
