What is Mebendazole?
Mebendazole is an "Antihelmintic," or anti-worm, medication.
It prevents worms from growing or multiplying in your body.
Mebendazole is used to treat infections caused by worms such as threadworms, whipworms, pinworms, roundworms, and hookworms.
It is also used to treat infections caused by more than one of these worms at the same time.
Mebendazole may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
Mebendazole is relatively free of toxic side effects or adverse reactions, although patients may complain of transient abdominal pain, diarrhea, slight headache, fever, dizziness, exanthema, urticaria and angioedema. It is, however, contraindicated in pregnant women because it has been shown to be embryotoxic and teratogenic in experimental animals.
How it works? Mebendazole is thought to work by selectively inhibiting the synthesis of microtubules in parasitic worms, and by destroying extant cytoplasmic microtubes in their intestinal cells: thereby blocking the uptake of glucose and other nutrients, resulting in the gradual immobilization and eventual death of the helminths. The drug is a highly effective broad spectrum antihelminitic indicated for the treatment of nematode infestations, including roundworm, whipworm, threadworm, and hookworm. It is poorly absorbed and has no systemic effects. What is the most important information I should know about mebendazole? Follow your physician instructions such as
1.Cleaning clothes, linens, and towels
2.Household disinfecting since pinworm infections are easily spread from one person to another.

* Mebendazole is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether it will be harmful to an unborn human baby. To play safe, consult your physician if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment prior to take it.
* It is not known whether mebendazole passes into breast milk and how it might affect a nursing baby.
* Do not take mebendazole without consult to your doctor if you are breast feeding mom.
