SS Edmund Fitzgerald Laker Sterling Ornament #2787 Hand & Hammer 2000. This sterling collectible shows a replica of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald going under the Mackinac Bridge. The Mackinac Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Straits of Mackinaw to connect the non-contiguous Upper and Lower peninsulas of the U.S. state of Michigan. Opened in 1957, the bridge (familiarly known as "Big Mac" and "Mighty Mac") is the third longest in total suspension in the world and the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western hemisphere.
Lake freighters, or Lakers, are bulk carrier vessels that ply the Great Lakes. The best known was the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, the most recent and largest major vessel to be wrecked on the Lakes. These vessels are traditionally called boats, although classified as ships. In the mid-20th century, 300 lakers worked the Lakes, but by the early 21st century there were fewer than 140 active lakers.
The size of this ornament is about 1-1/2" high X 2-1/2" wide. This Sterling Silver Ornament is in excellent like new collectible condition.
We look forward to having you as one of our happy buyers.
