Important early 1980's "East Village Scene" pop art/street art by Konstantin Bokov. Konstantin Bokov Title: Untitled-"Better Believe It" Size: Approximately 16" x 20" Collage on artist board of advertising Date: 1985
You are bidding on a rare and highly desirable pop art/street art collage by Konstantin Bokov. These collages are very rare. I believe he only did 20- 30 in the whole series. The collage consists of advertising that has been assembled in a Robert Rauschenberg / James Rosenquist -style social commentary on pop culture and consumerism.
This piece was done in 1985 - the apogee of the Reagan-era and 80's decadence.
Konstantin Bokov is a New York City based
artist famous for his “street art” assembled from found urban objects.
Bokov's roots are based in the 1970's Soviet Union where he was part of
the underground “unofficial / non-conformist art” movement.
Bokov arrived in New York City in the late
1970's and quickly became part of the East Village scene which emerged
in the early 1980's and included Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring,
Kenny Scharf and other street artists.
The gallery which launched the East Village movement, Now
Gallery, prominently exhibited Konstantin Bokov's art alongside his
peers such as Basquiat and Keith Haring, in numerous shows in the early
1980's.
Konstantin Bokov's works
are valued by collectors for their originality, humor, sophisticated
composition, and imaginative use of found rubbish which is materialized
into beauty.
Much
of Bokov's art, has an underlying social commentary, on pop culture and
politics. Konstantin Bokov's originality ranks among
the great urban street artists, such as Banksy, and Blek le Rat, Jean
Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring. Today Bokov's work is is being
rediscovered and appreciated by a new generation of savvy collectors who
are snapping up his best work of the 80's and early 90's.
You only need to look at what has happened
with prices for Banksy, Blek le Rat not to mention marginal poseurs
such as Faile, Sheperd Fairey, and Kaws in recent years.
Street Art is emerging as a highly
collectible area with several blockbuster auctions at Bonham's in past
few years. Konstantin Bokov, is a seminal figure in this movement, and I
believe his prices will soon reflect that value.
Consider that good Banksy's sell for
$250,000...Faile $10,000....Haring $250,000.....Basquiat $2-5 million.
Bokov: only $500-$2,000 ...for the moment.
I have been very fortunate to have acquired a large collection
of Bokov's best work of the important 1980's and early 1990's, part of
which I will be selectively offering on Ebay.
Take advantage of this rare opportunity to
acquire important Bokov's for your collection at reasonable price
before Bokov's work starts getting hyped up by the market.
