Igor Pantuhoff Surrealist still life 10" X 28" Circa 1960's Original vintage frame.
This is a great surrealist painting by Igor Pantuhoff who is of course famous today for his "big eye" paintings of "barely legal" girls. In this exquisite painting, Igor Pantuhoff used a sophisticated and elegant composition depicting three long-stemmed rose carnations in a sensual embrace.
Igor Pantuhoff paintings are highly collected these days, and have a major following amongst Hollywood celebrities, including Ashley and Kate Olson, John Waters, and many rock stars (for whatever that's worth, lol!). This particular painting was purchased from a celebrity estate in Palm Springs, California several years ago, believed to be an associate of Frank Sinatra. (In the 50's and 60's Igor Pantuhoff was a big part of the "jet set" scene in Hollywood, Palm Beach, and New York City). Igor's
paintings originally sold for $500-$1,000 in early 60's (equivalent to
$10,000+ today).
Pantuhoff's prices range today between $400 and $3,000 for good quality paintings, enjoy strong collector demand, and have been increasing in price recently.
The most recent sale of an Igor Pantuhoff surrealist painting was for $875 (plus 20% premium), for a painting which was in the Lehman Brothers collection. The highest record price of $4,612 was in the early 90's at Sotheby's - also for a surrealist painting. Christie's auction house has an Igor Pantuhoff surrealist still life coming up for sale with an estimate of $1,400.
Although you will
find plenty of Igor's "big eye" paintings on ebay, Igor's most valuable, works are
the surrealist paintings such as the one offered here right now.
This charming painting is reasonably, and fairly priced for a quick sale. FREE SHIPPING included!
BIO: Igor Pantuhoff was born in Russia in 1911, he emigrated to
the U.S. and studied with the great Hans Hoffman. Hoffman brought modern art theory technique to the United States, and influenced all the abstract expressionists. Pantuhoff lived together with Lee
Krasner in New York, before he ran off to the west coast to become a portrait painter to the rich and famous. They shared the apartment with Harold Rosenberg who became a legendary art critic, and promoter of abstract expressionism. Lee Krasner later married Jackson Pollock. She obviously had good taste in painters! A
brief obituary in the September 27, 1972, edition of The New York
Times says Igor Pantuhoff died on Sept. 25, 1972. It describes him
as a portrait painter “whose subjects had included Princess Grace of
Monaco, Mrs. James V. Forrestal, Laurance S. Rockefeller and Anthony
Drexel Duke.”
