A thought to be lost Eastern European heirloom. 'Kalibos' is a variety characteristic of the countries of the East producing tasty and beautifully colored red pointed cabbages.
Best grown for late summer and autumn harvest, 'Kalibos' has a short, thick stalk and pointed, tightly packed heads of edible, carmine-red leaves which are sweet with a delicate and refined flavor.
An ideal salad cabbage as it is sweet and crisp but loses the intense color with cooking. The color remains if lightly steamed. Ideal distinct shape and color for pickling, coleslaw and shredding on salads. Excellent as an ingredient in stir-fries.
Very slow to bolt. Crisp, well-shaped heads, harvested in mid-autumn to mid-winter when the head is well developed, have few waste outer leaves.
May be sown till early summer. Thrives in well-drained, non-acidic soil in full sun. Water in times of drought. Frost-resistant in the fall.
