Shillelagh History
Known by many names, including bata in Gaelic - which means, fighting stick - the original walking sticks gets its name from the Shillelagh Forest in County Wicklow. The forest was knowing for its large oak forest which have been mostly cut. A Shillelagh can be a cane made from oak, blackthorn, ash or holly.
Many young Irishmen practiced with the stick regularly because constant sparring was needed to improve their skills. The bata was held somewhat towards the lower middle of the stick and was snapped out with the wrist rather than swung like a cudgel. A simple art in terms of technique, it still took years of practice to master.
The bark is left on for added toughness. A copper stop is what i use to stop the bottom end of the stick from spliting, also metal ferrule can be used. The walking sticks are left to season for a year before work can be started on them. When the work is completed two coats of yahct varish are painted on the give it a smooth finish.
Walking stick size
The best way to measure for a walking stick is to stand up straight with your arms straight down by your side and measure from your wrist to the ground and that should be the correct lenght for your walking stick.
