About the artist:
Tradition plays a crucial role in preserving the various cultural legacies of humanity. Since art is a universal language, tradition is perhaps even more vital in the visual arts than in any other cultural discipline. Maestro Igor Babailov shares insights from his life's work in the classical-realist tradition to demonstrate the importance of the fundamental skills, values, and ethics of the Renaissance -- especially faith in the truth, beauty, and goodness of God's creation -- to counter the prevailing tendencies toward existentialism and agnosticism in art and culture that darken modern society.
Long recognized by contemporaries as a "Living Master,"Igor Babailov was honored with "maestro" by Vatican curator Monsignor Roberto Zagnoli in recognition of Babailov's achievement in painting official portraits of two popes, John Paul II and Benedict XVI. In addition to the papal portraits, which hang alongside paintings by Michelangelo, Bernini, Giotto, and other Renaissance masters in Vatican Museums in Castel Gandolfo and Rome, Maestro Babailov's other notable works are exhibited in renowned museums and collections throughout the world. These beautiful masterpieces include portraits of President George W. Bush (Presidential Collection); General George Washington (George Washington's Mount Vernon Museum); Nelson Mandela (Presidential Collection, South Africa); former Russian President Vladimir Putin (The Kremlin); former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney (Parliament Hill, House of Commons); and various other public figures.
A child prodigy, he painted his first portrait at the age of four and commenced his formal art education at nine, receiving his Master of Fine Arts degree from the world-acclaimed Surikov Academy in Moscow. In the course of his formal education (1974-1990), he trained in the renowned Classical Realism curriculum, studying the technique and principles of such masters as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, among others.
A combination of structure, discipline, and passion define both the artist and his work. A speaker with the exclusive Harry Walker Speakers Bureau of New York and an elected member of the National Arts Club of NYC, Maestro Babailov is also an accomplished writer, philosopher, and scholar in fine arts, in addition to being a master of portrait and multi-figurative paintings.
He is the only living artist featured in the North American tour of "Vatican Splendors: A Journey through Faith and Art," an extraordinary exhibit that celebrates the history of Vatican art. Pope Benedict XVI personally selected the Babailov portrait to represent his papacy in the exhibit, which concludes its three-city tour in Fort Lauderdale from January 29 to April 24, 2011.
PLEASE NOTE: Limited Edition prints of the Vatican papal portrait of Pope Benedict XVI, "The Truth, The Way, and The Life" are available upon request.
God bless you!
