Francis Wallace Grenfell, 1st Baron Grenfell, GCB, GCMG, PC (29 April 1841 – 27 January 1925) was a British Army officer. In 1904, after commanding the 4th Army Corps, Francis Grenfell was promoted General. That same year he was made Commander in Chief of British forces in Ireland, and retired four years later as a Field Marshal. Appointed CB in 1885, Grenfell was knighted as a KCB the following year and promoted Major General in 1889! He commanded the forces at Suakim and Toski in 1889, and, in recognition of the transformation he had achieved in making the Egyptian Army a successful fighting force, he was appointed GCMG on leaving Egypt in 1892. Two years later he became Inspector General of Auxiliary Forces at the War Office, and in 1897 he returned to Egypt to command the British forces there during the expedition to Khartoum, for which he became GCB the following year. He then became Governor of Malta in 1899, a post he held for four years. In 1902 he was created Baron Grenfell, of Kilvey in the County of Glamorgan. "Hallam's works helped materially to lay the foundations of the English historical school [The State of Europe] was probably the first English history which, without being merely antiquarian, set an example of genuine study from original sources" (DNB).
In the first chapter of the Literature Hallam sketches the state of literature in Europe down to the end of the 14th century: the extinction of ancient learning which followed the fall of the Roman empire and the rise of Christianity; the preservation of the Latin language in the services of the church; and the slow revival of letters, which began to show itself soon after the 7th century--"the nadir of the human mind"--had been passed. For the first century and a half of his special period he is mainly occupied with a review of classical learning, and he adopts the plan of taking short decennial periods and noticing the most remarkable works which they produced. The rapid growth of literature in the 16th century compels him to resort to a classification of subjects: in the period 1520–1550 we have separate chapters on ancient literature, theology, speculative philosophy and jurisprudence, the literature of taste, and scientific and miscellaneous literature; and the subdivisions of subjects is carried further of course in the later periods. Thus poetry, the drama and polite literature form the subjects of separate chapters. One inconvenient result of this arrangement is that the same author is scattered over many chapters, according as his works fall within this category or that period of time. Names like Shakespeare, Grotius, Francis Bacon and Thomas Hobbes appear in half a dozen different places. The individuality of great authors is thus dissipated except when it has been preserved by an occasional sacrifice of the arrangement—and this defect, if it is to be esteemed a defect, is increased by the very sparing references to personal history and character with which Hallam was obliged to content himself.
This is the True FIRST EDITION, owned by this important British General: Sir Francis Grenfell.
This would make an excellent gift and/or addition to any fine library. Antiquarian books make a great investment, are only going up in value, and are sure to increase the aura of any room or office!
