French M1878 Bayonet
This is a French M1878 Bayonet. This is not the Gras bayonet - for as you can see, the hilt is straight-backed, and not offset as found with the Gras bayonet! It was originally manufactured for the Navy Kropatschek Model 1878 Rifle. The engraving on the spine of the bayonet (in French) reads "Moine(?) de Steyr 1878", which says was manufactured in Steyr in 1878. The serial numbers on the upper scabbard and front ricasso are matching - #AC11962! For a 130 year old bayonet, the blade is outstandingly bright with minor pitting. Unfortunately, the stud spring is broken, and the grips have been replaced. This is an original bayonet from just after the Franco-Prussian War. Reference: P.
