Welcome....and Thank You for stopping by to 'take a peek' at my item for sale.
Up for bids is a 272 page book, entitled; "The Masters' Book of Ikebana". Background & Principles of Japanese Flower Arrangement. With lesssons by Japan's three leading masters & a treasury of over 400 photographs.
Even the binding cloth on the book has a story. It is what is refered to as 'kimino-silk floral pattern' and is in the favorite spring color the Japanese call "young grass'.
The band is a handmade, hand crumpled Japanese paper called Kozo Momigami, derived from the paper mulberry, The end papers reproduce a detail from an ancient scroll painting showing a 12th century cherry-blossom viewing party.
As you know, the Japanese people have a deep rooted history in the arts, Ikebana being one of them and this book will take you through its history.
A background essay is written by Donald Richie, and He along with Meridith Weatherby edited this book.
This is a first edition, 1966 book. Copyright in Japan, 1966 by Bijutsu Shuppan-sha, and printed in Japan
The book itself is a work of art, the photographs, drawings, etc. are simply stunning in their detail. There are nunerous fold out pages where the instructional pages go through every little detail.
Included also are many drawings, some in black and white, and some in brilliant colors.
It would be a shame to do so, but the photographs in this book are so exquisite they could be removed from this book and framed. They are the works of 15 different persons, several of whom are among Japan's leading photographers.
On the cover is an inset of what appears to be cedar wood with Japanese symbols on it.
I don't know if there is supposed to be a dust jacket or not. There is none for this book, there is a Gold colored band a little over 4" wide at the bottom that runs around the book and has the title and other information about the book on it. The spine of the book has "The Masters' Book Of Ikebana" in Gold Leaf print.
I'm not exactly sure who Doris M Apperson is, Ex Libris is beneath the 'praying hands' on the inside first page, and her signature appears on the following page.
This is a BIG book. It measures almost 14" in length and 10 1/2" wide, it is 1 3/4" thick and weighs 6#'s 5 oz....before being boxed and wrapped.
Anybody that is into the art of Ikebana, or simply loves flower arranging, would certainly enjoy this book. As a matter of fact, even a book collector would enjoy owning this book for its sheer workmanship and beauty.
The book is in excellent condition, thumbing through I did not see any pages that were dog eared or torn. The only thing I saw was on just a few pages, maybe two, are what appear to be ink spots, but are like on the edge of a page. I hesitated in even mentioning them . All pages are tight to the binding and the spine is as good as when new. You will not be disappointed in the condition of this book...I assure you.
Thanks again for stopping by...and...Good Luck Bidding !!
