History of the Nuestra Senora de Atocha

In 1622 a fleet of Spanish galleons sailed from Cuba bound for Spain. They were full of copper, silver, gold, tobacco, gems, jewels, jewelry and indigo. The Spanish government was having financial problems and they were in desperate need of a cash infusion from treasures obtained from the New World. A series of delays caused the group of ships to depart in the heart of hurricane season. Shortly after their departure from Cuba a fierce hurricane struck and the two ships that were the most laden with treasure were sunk. Their names were the Santa Margarita and the Nuestra Senora de Atocha. The Spanish tried to recover the lost treasures, and were partly successful in recovering the Santa Margarita. However, they were not successful at salvaging the treasures of the Atocha because there were hurricanes that damaged & scattered the remains after it went down, and it sank in water too deep for diving. The treasures of the Atocha lay buried on the ocean floor for almost 400 years until the salvage group led by Mel Fisher discovered the wreckage in 1985. This coin is one of the treasures that Mel Fisher’s group discovered.

This treasure is more than a piece of silver, it’s a historical artifact dating back to the days when our country was just beginning to be populated and the pirate era of the Caribbean was in its infancy. This coin really belongs in a museum, but now is your chance to own a piece of history.

To add to your assurance that this is truly an original Atocha coin, the coin and certificate were recently mailed to Mel Fisher's Museum to be appraised. The appraisal letter contains the Mel Fisher seal as well as the Museum Curator's signature in blue.

BEWARE of Atocha coins on EBAY!! DON'T BUY A COIN WITHOUT A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY! IT COSTS $200 PLUS TWO WAY SHIPPING AND INSURANCE TO GET ONE! I encourage you to look up any coin you are interested in buying on www.historicshipwrecks.com ! Mel Fisher has all his coins registered there. Then click on "Search for Artifacts". You can find the coins by omitting the year, so if a coin is numbered 85A-####### you can enter the numbers after the dash in the "Tag#" field and click on "Search" and the coin should appear. You cannot obtain a certificate or appraisal without either an original coin flip or a certificate. If you don't have either document, Mel Fisher's will not certify or appraise it. You will see that my coins come with a certificate, a recent coin flip, and are all registered & photographed.
