Collectors of Gorham's Martele line will instantly recognize the name Codman. William C. Codman was Gorham's Chief designer and with Edward Holbrook was responsible for the production of Gorham's Martele line. One of Codman's sons Edwin was a modeler for Gorham in this time frame. Edwin, together with his brother Frank went into business together around 1904, naming their firm Codman & Codman. Their works (very few are known) exhibit an obvious similarity in design, decoration and manufacturing method to those of the Martele line. This piece is no exception as you will see in the images below. There is very little information available on the firm, search the Internet and you will be surprised at what you don't find! There have been two articles in Silver Magazine over the years but I have found nothing mentioned in American silver reference books. The firm was out of business by 1905 which explains why so few pieces are known. The only item referenced in the one Silver Magazine article I read was a celery dish that is currently held in the Museum of art at the Rhode Island School of Design. This center bowl measures 18.25" X 12" X 3.75" It weighs 54 troy ounces, a substantial piece by any standard. It is entirely handwrought, chased and repoussed with Poppies and rests upon four "punched" feet. This piece is in superb original condition. It retains a fine satin finish and is devoid of any repairs, damage or evidence of misuse. There is a period "ribbon script" GL monogram in the center of the bowl. A true American silver rarity!
