Collectors of American coin silver will recognize the raised effect at the terminal of these G.W. Stewart spoons to be highly unusual. Unique in my experience, known to some collectors perhaps. It appears to be an experimental attempt at making the typical "fiddle" top decoration. Each spoon top displays differences in metal flow and die engraving. Raised decoration was nothing new, there are birdback, urnback, basket of flowers, sheaf of wheat and in rare cases patriotic emblems embossed on early coin silver spoons. I've owned many types and variations but I have never seen pieces like these. Stewart worked in Lexington Kentucky during the 1840's and 1850's. These spoons are in good condition, one has a small dent in the bowl, they measure 8.75" long each and have matching JRM monograms. The marks are G.W Stewart Lex KY. Lightly tarnished but they have a pleasing natural finish, no evidence of buffing or heavy cleaning.
