This is a coin silver fish slice or fish server with Hyde & Goodrich marks. There are also barely visible pseudo hallmarks on the reverse and what appears to be a French import mark on the obverse of the handle. I've seen this type of "french" mark on New Orleans coin silver from the period and it's probable that the mark is also a pseudo mark. What makes this fish slice unusual is the monogram at the top of the handle. "Sloo". During the time frame this fish slice was sold in New Orleans (C.1850) there was a Colonel Sloo of the Kentucky 3rd Cavalry in the city. He was involved in a project called the Sloo Grant. The Sloo grant sought to work with the Mexican goverment to build a railroad in the Tehuantepec region of Mexico which would connect the Atlantic with the Pacific. Essentially it would be something like the Panama Canal but on a smaller scale of course. How many men of means with the last name Sloo were in New Orleans in this time frame? Probably few if any. I think it is reasonable to consider that this fish slice was purchased by A.G. Sloo while working in New Orleans to negotiate the construction of the Tehuantepec Railroad. Regardless, it is a very fine piece of Southern Coin silver. Measures 12 1/8" long and is in the Fiddle Thread pattern. Elaborate open work and an engraved carp on the flat area. Good condition.
