C. 1880's A unique George Shreve sterling silver letter opener in the Aesthetic taste. Hand Wrought the handled with hammered finish, cast and applied coiled snake surmounted by a hammered sphere. This is in the form of The rod of Asclepius also known as Asklepios or Aesculapius and the asklepian. The name of the symbol derives from its early and widespread association with Asclepius, the son of Apollo, who was a practitioner of medicine in ancient Greek mythology. It is also the symbol of the American Medical Association. The blade with Gothic engraving and JCM monogram. Marked with the Bumble Bee trademark, George C. Shreve & Co., San Francisco and Sterling. The sphere was formed in two pieces and is very slightly split at the seam, an easy fix for a professional silversmith but is not a significant issue and I would leave it as it is (don't fix it Doc!). Measures 10.25" long. Weight 3.75 troy ounces. Pieces by George Shreve in the Aesthetic style are exceedingly rare. An exceptional California item for the discerning collector.
